Ok, so you hold up symbol to a webcam and suddenly the real world is merged with the digital. Like most people I was absolutely amazed when I first witnessed it, but recently I have began to wonder whether the excitement behind Augmented Reality is just going to wither away without it really reaching it’s potential as a media format. Fortunately – according to Gartner – AR is only just about to reach it’s Peak of Inflated Expectation, before plummeting into a Trough of Disillusionment and levelling out in a Plateau of Productivity (definition of phases).
This journey that AR is taking is known as the ‘Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies‘. Figure 1 illustrates where various technologies currently stand. And as well as Human Augentation, Context Delivery Architecture sound interesting.
